isn't that built into the 3 xseries gold package somehow?

goode says:

yeah, looks like quite a cool thing!

Alfie says:

jbnm - yeah, the *service* is, but you need a slingbox to use it, hence my call for help to test the on-handset application.

Orb works really really well, just watched a bit of a might boosh episode, accessed a PDF and listened to some death cab for cutie. Orb is perfect for those moments when your telling a friend "oh man, I have the best video/song at home, I wish I could play it to you".

My Dad has a slingbox at home that I dial into to watch...what do you want to do Alfie? Test it on your phone?

James says:

Ok, give me a few mins and I'll see what I can do about getting you access to it!

Alfie says:

James, if it's not too much bother I'd really appreciate that, thank you. I am on ze email of course.

i'm about to upgrade my phone and am considering getting the xseries gold package with the Nokia E65 and it includes a free slingbox - is it worth it?!?

Alfie says:

dude, for serious, it really is. Here's the story of my first day use of it:

Setup including getting all my contacts from mobical.net, setting up msn and skype: 10 minutes.

Set off to my sisters on the bus, 35 minute journey.

On the way, I used the ebay service to bid on a 2gb mini sd for under a tenner which had 3 minutes till end of bidding. Using reload I won the item. Paid for it and it arrived this morning.

Whilst on the bus I received a call from my flatmate via skype, crystal clear, call came through as a normal call basically. I then made a skype call, clear as day as I was travelling along commercial road.

I set up Orb today, took 15 minutes in total. So far I've streamed video, audio and downloaded documents from my home machine to the handset.

Couple this application led device with an unlimited data package and you've got the future, for serious. I'm not flamboyantly pushing 3 at all, Im pushing their combination of an application led device with a 3G unlimited data package.

It's just the first of many data/application driven packages that will appear, all the other operators are struggling with convergence and 3 just happen to be best positioned as an operator to be first off the mark.

Just emailed you on gmail regarding slingbox Alfie!

The 3 packages sound very good - let's hope Orange catch up soon!

25th Apr 2007, 14:33

goode says:

yeah I'm waiting for orange to catch up too! Slowwwww..... :(

25th Apr 2007, 14:35

well, i've just come off the phone from upgrading to 3 xseries gold with the nokia E65! should come tomorrow.
Looking forward to it more after reading your comment. So skype is absolutely free isn't it? If I get a skype handset at home for example, my gf can call me via my mac to my mobile? Sorry, i'm not that clued up with skype yet!

25th Apr 2007, 14:36

goode says:

jbnm, that sounds about right... Of course there is the option of "skype in" numbers where you purchase a landline style number that allows anyone to phone you (using a normal phone) via skype... Quite reasonable too i think?

25th Apr 2007, 14:39

Alfie says:

jbnm - absolutely totally free, the only thing it doesnt support is skype out and in.

btw, just finished watching 5 minutes of buffer free BBC one from James' dads slingbox :D

25th Apr 2007, 14:47

What is 'Orb' that is also included in the Gold package?

25th Apr 2007, 14:58

Alfie says:

CHeck it out at www.orb.com - essentially it's a consumer friendly pcanywhere thing where you can access all the stuff on your pc through teh application. With orb you can also stream your media to your phone so it's pretty ace.

25th Apr 2007, 15:07

obviously it doesn't work with a mac. boo :o(

25th Apr 2007, 16:42

Alfie says:

oh that's a bit arse so it is.
