"And as you cross the circle line,
Well the ice wall creaks behind
You're a rabbit on the run.
And the silver splinters fly
In the corner of your eye,
Shining in the setting sun.
Well do you ever get the feeling
That the story's too damn real
And in the present tense.
Or that everbody's on the stage
And it seems like you're the only
Person sitting in the audience

Skating away, skating away, skating away On the thin ice of the new day"

The Animal Fence

mat says:

is it wrong to want this series in print form, to put on my wall?

1st May 2007, 01:50

Caine says:

If it is, then I'm wrong too. ;D It's pure North Dakota WTF.

Thanks for the HL!

swamprose says:

this is wonderful.

can I send some more?

1st May 2007, 02:46

Caine says:

Thank you. I suppose you could, we could always drive them out to the farm and explain they were donated. :D

1st May 2007, 02:50

factotum says:

The animal fence is genius! it seems like a rural equivalent to the urban practice of tying stuffed animals onto the front grille of garbage trucks

1st May 2007, 02:52

Caine says:

Thank you. :) Um, we lived major urban for decades, and I never saw stuffed animals on garbage trucks. Sounds interesting!

The animal fence is most likely a way to identify the farm for people who've never been there before, but you never know. ;)

1st May 2007, 02:56

factotum says:

I just did a google image search for "garbage trucks stuffed animals" and the second thing that popped up was this link to a New York Times article on the subject
www.nytimes.com/2005/ 11/13/nyregion/13stuffed...
I'm not sure that that is a complete URL, but you can probably find it

1st May 2007, 03:01

Caine says:

Thanks! I'll check it out.

1st May 2007, 03:08

Caine says:

Factotum, did you see the gallery?

1st May 2007, 03:25

bfish says:

Very, very nice. Love the 1st and last shots... and the two in the middle as well.
the bears look like they were shot down during an escape attempt

1st May 2007, 04:22

Caine says:

AAH, you weren't the only one, I found the Panda to be disturbing.

Bfish, thank you, and you described it perfectly!

1st May 2007, 04:30

Sprocket says:

ha ha ha lol

I'd donate my teds to the fence, but I don't think they'd survive the weather.

1st May 2007, 06:22

Caine says:

That's fine, Sprocket, keep your teds nice and warm. :)

1st May 2007, 06:28

Helen says:

Weird, but enticing. Not quite a picnic.

1st May 2007, 07:21

Caine says:

No, definitely not a teddy bear picnic. ;)

1st May 2007, 07:50

Steve says:

The Panda crucifixion is iconic :)

1st May 2007, 09:01

Caine says:

Yes, it is. I was amazed, to say the least. You really never know what you're going to see here on the backroads.

1st May 2007, 09:10

paintist says:

these are great..look how grubby the snowman can get if he doesnt melt away.....

the Panda pic reminds me of a particularly irritating comedian over here called Dom Joly...he was always dressing up in animal costumes and getting beaten up.....

1st May 2007, 09:10

Caine says:

Thanks, P. I have no idea how long they've actually been out there, but for some, it's been a while.

As the panda reminds you of an irritating comedian, now you can imagine him wired to a barbwire fence. ;)

taniwha says:

i think it would make my daughter cry

1st May 2007, 09:21

Caine says:

Awwwww. :( Around here, it would be considered harmless, a way to both identify the road into the farm and possibly a way to get rid of the kids old stuffed animals without actually getting rid of them. Edited to add: the winds are so strong here, you couldn't simply place them along the fence.

1st May 2007, 09:25

paintist says:

hahaha...just went off to look at the gallery....garbage men do the same thing around here too....

1st May 2007, 10:01

Caine says:

Do they really? Hmmm, might have to start something here. I have a very large, very pink "energizer" type bunny in my cedar chest.

1st May 2007, 10:10

is it the butcher-bird that hangs its prey on fences? If so maybe this was created by a toy butcher bird!

1st May 2007, 10:34

Caine says:

Maybe so, maybe so. North Dakota is just full of strange.

1st May 2007, 10:38

Viv says:

It's a mad place you live - think it do it - no worries about what the neighbours think - just brill!

Euphro says:

Wow, amazing, and a little distrubing out of context, but, as you say, it's mainly there as a courtesy to visitors :)

factotumNLI says:

Caine, I'm going to e-mail you the text of the New York Times article, in case you couldn't access it. If anyone else is interested, just e-mail me.

hildegard says:

Love it - straight out of David Lynch.
The last one has a terrible pathos; innocence lost & childhood betrayed...
;)
A private waste company took over the contract here & banned the totem animals from their trucks. A sad day...

Gael says:

beats garden gnomes ...

1st May 2007, 19:16

These are aces!

maybe we should all donate a cuddly animal to be fastened to the fence....

1st May 2007, 20:13

chocolate says:

weird but ... well, yeah weird. whatever floats your boat, and if it gets you a highlight, even better! =)
and they are nice somehow these pictures ...

1st May 2007, 20:53

Caine says:

Viv, very true. People are very individualistic here, and there's little worrying about what others think. Rick just told me there's a tractor on a pole out Glen Ullin way. I think that's the next thing to go look at. :)

Jules, LOL. :)

Thanks, Euphro. It really does look rather innocent if a bit wtf? from the road. Rick has a pic of it straight on from the road on his blog.

Thanks, Factotum. I found the article okay. :)

Thanks, Hildegard. Aw, it seems petty and silly to ban totem animals.

Gael, I agree. :D

Thanks, Sir Findo! I imagine the farm owners would be stunned by animal donations. :D

1st May 2007, 21:32

Caine says:

Chocolate, yes weird. North Dakota abounds with weird. Weird makes for great pics though. ;D

:D It's always interesting here.

Dhamaka says:

So sorry I missed this first time around. It's a great series and I'm pleased I finally got here

30th May 2007, 03:24

Caine says:

Thanks, D. No worries. :) As you can see, it evolved into an interesting conversation. That reminds me, I still have to stick my big Energizer Bunny somewhere in the yard. :)

30th May 2007, 03:55

Mandy. says:

funny, I missed this too. From the title I expected some smarmy man trying to sell stolen farm animals...

30th May 2007, 05:09

Caine says:

Heh. No, I wouldn't blog a smarmy type like that, just hurt them. ;)
