i assume you have to be in a wlan / wifi area to use it right? i just tried using the 3 access point and it failed :o(
I tried fring on 3 and it doent work only in wifi mode
Im using the Nokia N73, on X-series gold, using the access point 3 and it works great! Give us some more detail on your handset and package to see if we can't get to the bottom of it. Alternatively, you can always call 3.
I'm using the Nokia N73, on X-series silver, using the 3 access point and it works great for me too.
Also, Paul and I discovered today that you can make a Fring call to people using Gtalk or MSN chat :D
Just. Wow.
Oops, yes I forgot to post about that. Discovered by accident, but what a fantastic way to have no phone bill!! :D
Like you say Alfie, Just. Wow.
This is great piece of software. I tried it on my N70 and Google Talks great. Chat and navigation is easy to use.
I use my T-mobile W'n'W connection...
HI, I have Three X Series and i am using Fring on it can i use Skype In on that Please Let me know if any one can help
I think you can, yes. It should offer you a skype connection in settings.
this is what sold me, in the end
and mind you, i get a really good deal from orange :)
my e65 is charging now.
Is it possible to get the 3 X-Series Silver (£5) tariff as a stand-alone data-only contract?
Or does 3 require it to be a bolt-on to a voice tariff?
How about stand-alone and without being bundled with a handset/smartphone purchase?
With many thanks,
KimiK
I have tried this on a N70 (which was on orange but got unlocked) and it doesn't like the GPRS access point.
Anyone have any idea? I have a 3 10MB data package (2.50 a month). Do I perhaps need the x-series package?
I'm pretty sure the x-series is only available as a bolt on to a voice tariff from 3.
Personally, I have no complaints from the whole 3 deal so far, having spent the past 12 years at vodafone. I would recommend it.
I've got an N95 (completely unlocked) and a 3 SIM. just purchased the x-series add on through My Three and while web browsing works fine, Fring simply won't work with the 3 access point - what am I doing wrong?!
from what I gather this only works with silver or gold x-series packages but I've yet to clarify that.
Ok Ive got fring to work on my home wifi but cannot get it to work on 3. Can anybody help?
X-series silver, E65
Same here. Can't use the Three access point. Fring tries to 'Create connection' but fails after about 10 seconds and suggests to search for a wifi access point.
i'm using E65 ... it just won't use THREE access point !!! HELP
I'm using x-series silver on a N73 and have no problems with fring. Have looked into the settings, but can't find anything that would explain why you can't connect, sorry.
OK I have emailed 3 but no response I have got new APN settings from the Nokia Site (3 services) but still no joy. Only thing I can think of is that Nokia have blocked VOIP via 3G Network on the E65 (latest Firmware). Can anybody with an E65 who has got Fring to work with '3' please check and post their firmware version. (to get this = *#0000#). Hopefully a solution is out there.
nige, have you tried it? I know both Alfie and I have N73's but there are a few out there with the E65.
OK, got fring working. For those who have the problem of:
1) FRING not starting
or
2) Fring not using the three access point
Try registering for X-series Silver with Three first ! I had both of the above problems. Seems that the network operator has to ENABLE your voip service before voip applications will work. I have E65 with Three network in UK.
OK Ive got X-series silver, how do I register it with three? Also KT if you get a sec can you check your firmware vesion (type *#0000#) and let me know. I'd love to get this working its driving me up the wall.
Have you tried ringing 3 to ask them about registering? I've found them fairly helpful for the most part.
i have e65 xseries gold and it worked absolutely fine first time!
Yeah I've rang 3 they said everything should work fine and the X-series has been activated. Will ring them later on and ask them to check that Ive been registered. On a slightly different topic do any of you have this problem:
When I connect to the internet on my E65 a message comes up telling me that too many connections are open and then I have to disconect from 3 mms (mobile mail server) before
being allowed to access the internet.
i have not been able to get it to work on my e65 or my n73. for some reason fring won't locate the 3 access point. it worked on my e65 via wifi just fine however.
Fring will show the access points on my E65 but it will only let me connect to my wifi connection even though it shows the 3 access points when i try to connect it just times out.
firmware 1.0633.18.02 date 26/01/07 RM-208.
I originally signed up for X-series, then tried using skype downloaded from Three. THe service said you have to register with 3. So gave them a ring and they told me that i have to be on X-series silver or gold. WEIRD as X-series silver costs the same as the 'normal' X-series! Anyway, just make sure that you have X-series silver by checking your active add-ons on my3.
Initially, Fring would try to connect using 3 access point then it would fail. Then it wouldn't even start .. showed the startup screen and then gave up. Then it wouldn't even un-install. So i re-downloaded and reinstalled but that didn't solve anything. After i registered for X-series silver, the problem was solved. Coincidence ? Maybe...
Frings pretty awesome. Drains the battery like no tomorrow tho. And i was hoping that i'd be able to send sms via skypeout. But unfortunately no support for that yet.
Did you know you can make calls through fring to people on your msn or googletalk list, aswell as your skype one?
I'm thinking "never have a phone bill over the standard rental" ever again!! :)
Lewis, i assume your 3 access point works under web browsing? And that you are signed up to X-series silver or gold? In my experience it didn't work on the bog standard X-Series. Registering with 3 just means signing up for Silver or Gold. There's no registration as such.
Try changing the connection from wifi to 3 within Fring settings.
540air, yes, sounds good, but sadly not many people i want to talk to sit behind a pc 24/7 with a headset on their head!
And not many of my friends are 'tech' enough to use fring which only supports Symbian OS.
So ... i find myself admiring the Fring screen and my pretty contact list with the "Fring test call" my new best friend.
Chat is probably a nice touch. I was using voip with my brother who was on msn while he typed and I talked.
I'm much the same in that the test call is one of the only friends I have too :D
I didn't know you could do one typing and one talking though. I tried chatting with my eldest daughter while she was on msn, but I found that every time she typed when I was trying to, I would lose words as she sent her message.
I'm assuming that you make a fringcall to the msn user and everything you say comes out to them as text? Wonder how that works with accents etc.
well bit tired now phoned 3 again they got me to do a complete reset on my E65. Just installed mobile mail and skype so will have a go at getting fring to work after ive had sleep.
oh yeah thanks KT for the firmware check mines the same so at least that issue is ruled out.
Only other thing i can think of is the 3 access point settings on your phone lewis. Mine is default. Ie didn't change a thing from when i got the phone. I can post the 3 access point settings later on he it would help. Typing this message on my way to work on the e65. How cool is that? By the way ... When i chatted to my bro on msn it didn't come out as text. He heard me. Only that he chose 2 reply by typing.
yeah if you could post the access settings please KT. Still cant get it to work tried again this morning.
Connectio Name : 3
Data bearer : packet data
Access point name: three.co.uk
User name: none
prompt password: no
password: blank
authentication: normal
homepage: mobile.three.co.uk/hb/HutchKey
Yeah KT I have the same settings, one thing I did notice is when I download fring before I install a message saying 'unsupported' is present however I am still able to install and run the application.
Anybody else get this?
No, didn't get this message. very strange. Have you tried re-downloading . maybe the version has been updated?
i just changed to x series silver.fingers crossed it works.
Ok, here's the lowdown.
There is a big difference between the X-series add-on and the X-series Silver add-on!
They cost the same, one allows all protocols, one restricts them!
I switched to X series silver and fring now works like a dream!
I had to tell them I had just purchased an N73 and in doing so they switched my add-on.
It meant 8 hours of down time but now i am happy!
Other softs that weren't working properly, such as widsets through socket connection now work fine aswell.
hope this helps some of you!
Hmmm I am at a deadend I've rang three and they ensure me I am on X series Silver, I've checked 'My3' to confirm this. My settings are the same as others on this blog who have success using the service. So dont know what to do now, maybe I will try my sim card in a mates handset and see if that works.
Hi Lewis,
I would recommend you contact the guys at the Xseries blog, both in comments and via email; they are incredibly helpful.
Nige, I've contacted the Xseries Blog as advised by Alfie. Will post any info when I get it.
Nige, Lewis, were your E65 phones originally non-3 phones?
I think this may be the root of your problems.
Perhaps there's more to the settings i listed previously,.
My phone was also brought direct from 3.
Xseries team got back to me unfortunately as Fring is not supported by three, there is little they can do. However they responded really quickly and where genuinely concerned.
Oh well not sure what to do now.
Sorry to hear that guys. Are you able 2 use skype? i don't understand how skype works but not fring. hmmm ... Perhaps do what you said earlier. See if you can try it on another phone.
Tried it on my mates N80, same problem.
Skype is no good for me I need to use SIP settings.
What is SIP? I tried to read up on it on wiki, but it's really techno babble. Session something protocol. Anyone explain in plain english ?
At least if Skype works, you know it's a configuration problem.
Basically KT by using SIP settings you can setup a landline number for free eg 0151 666 555 you can have this diverted to fring on your phone the caller would pay local call rate, (unless they get free local calls like alot of people do) you would pay nothing. Havnt got time at mo to explain how to set this up but give me a few days I'll post how to do this step by step.
This is why I needed Fring to work so much on my mobile!
Hi everyone,
I'm about to switch networks and have looked into the X Series service from 3, seems very attractive to my needs. My only concern is that 3 would block any services to access their 3G access point or charge extra? I'm planning to use VOIP mainly as I run a E61i, should I be concerned? Or does the 1Gb internet access cover VOIP also?
I'm going to Australia in October so want to use my UK number and still make cheap local calls using VOIP through the 1GB data permitted through X Series, would Three consider this outside of their fair usage policy or is this something that is considered normal usage?
Your thoughts are much appreciated!
Jia
I'm sure you can use your free minutes that are included in the package to make calls in OZ - no charge for international roaming
What about using my data allowance to make VOIP calls when in Oz? Any additional charges for that?
hello
i am not that technical tried to follow the above but a little confused. I have an n70 on a 3 contract. They are pushing me to upgrade to an n73 but i would like to keep the n70, as cheaper line rental The only thing that i liked about the n73 was that i could take x series silver and use skype. However if i get fring and get the unlimited internet add on will skype work. Any suggestions would be greatfull
Sounds brilliant ... one thing though, with the x-series Skype client your 5000 hours per month fair usage on Skype is additional to your data allowance whereas I am assuming Fring will be eating the 1GB per month data allowance. Does anyone know if this is the case ... if Fring isn't hammering my data allowance I will definitely be using it.
Hi - de here from X-Series blog. Fring def. comes out of data allowance. And Skype is in addition to your data allowance. Hope that helps. Of course the 1GB allowance is a "guide" :-)
Thanks for the information de. I will have to give it a trial and see how much data I use.
Hello! Beware if you use Fring on X-Series and use more than your allowance (1G for Silver and 3G for Gold I think) you will be charged! Moreover, the MSN and Skype provided by three on your handset are free to use and don't use your data allowance. If you install Fring all will go through your Data allowance and my reach the limit pretty soon.
Skype on X-Series utilize the voice network of Three, that's why the voice quality is so good..and free. On Fring it goes through data network and there is quite a long latency. Use it if necessary. And no operators have unlimited data. The best they offer is unlimited time connected..not data..beware!
Hello everyone,
I having the same problem as Lewis. I got Nokia E65 from 3 in June and activated x-series silver, but no luck with fring/skype or even their own skype client (although 3 assured me it should work they couldn't fix the problem. I gave up then, but now inpired by comments that fring should definitely work with x-series silver I got myself a new phone HTC tytn II (wm6) and installed fring on it (x-series silver activated again - or so my3 says). Fring works like a dream on wi-fi, but not via 3 access point - windows live messenger does not work with 3 access point either. Can anyone please advise, as I feed I am close to the solution but cannot get any help out of 3. Thank you
Hi,
i want to use your fring service sipcall by mobile phone plz let me tell how can i use this service and also how much min. credit i have to take from first time for recharging my personal accounts.
waiting your reply
Hi
Does any body know that how much is 1GB in terms of your Mobile broadband download limitation per month? Thanks in advance
I have used Fring succesfully on N73 standard edition on O2 bussiness account. the data usage when texting is super low. Don't want to use voice though - company phone. no problems with Skype at all - very good on commute trains. ONly thing I am looking for is a good cheap unlimited data plan that ALLOWS usage of VOIP. If you check most of the others (except 3) it is in their T&Cs; :`(
oops, ok last post should be read as posted from Bulboy. Sorry KT and Kt but these were my initials as well... :D
