Itaipu is enormous!

Itaipu is the worlds largest electricity-generating plant (it produces
18GW when working flat out), on the border between Brazil and Paraguay.
Everything is on an immense scale. The turbine hall is as long as the
runway at Rothera (900m!) and it produces 20% of Brazil's power, and 90%
of Paraguay's!

I showed these just now to DH (the electrician) and told him the generating capacity. His reply: "18 gigawatts! Damn, that's a lot of watts!" :)
