I was mauled by leeches in the jungles of Belize, had no idea what was happening til I got a tickly feeling on my tummy, scratched it, and there was blood everywhere ! ...... but no pain .....

Yeah actually - carry a small pot of salt. Immediately rubbing them in salt makes them instantly detach and skulk off to find shelter (see the blood trail) but doesn't fizz them to death like it does to slugs.

Yep, as Maggie says, you don't feel them at all - and they get everywhere!

In your shoes, under your nails, between your fingers...

They don't carry disease either and were used in Singhalese ayurvedic medicine becuase they were meant to clean the blood. I've got eczema - so I found them quite soothing! Yet that didn't detract from the involuntary freakout the moment you discovered another one ssssucking yer bloooood.
