what are the carvings on that plank of wood?

I think the carving is made from a piece of Yew, just outside the entrance to the nature reserve. The internet tells me it is called 'The Spirit of Kingley Vale' by Walter Bailey. I'm not sure what it's supposed to mean (I thought it looked a bit like a hand? - protecting the forest?) but it looks good anyway.

I took a look at Walter Bailey's website; his work photographs well in the landscape.
