Dr Johnson, famous lexicographer & wit, lived here. He was so important in his day that a Scottish writer named Boswell attached himself to Johnson & wrote a biography of the older man, as well as journals describing his life with Johnson. Johnson is still an important figure in British history & literature.
He always kept a cat, one in particular - Hodge - is described in Boswell's "Life of Johnson". The reason for the oyster shells is that Johnson didn't think it right that his servants should also serve his cat so he would go himself to buy the cat's daily meal of oysters, which in those days were cheap food.

Hodge's statue is outside Johnson's house, which has been preserved as a museum. Think the old boy's still getting more kudos than Hodge. ;)

Now I wonder if mine would like oysters. He doesn't like cockles but perhaps he has more refined tastes.
