That last one's a horse, BTW.
They weren't meant to end up quite this small. So much for auto re-size... :)

A Tale of Two Cities?

12th Sep 2007, 15:15

hildegard says:

Can see how you'd think that;
"In the midst of them, the hangman, ever busy and ever worse than useless, was in constant requisition; now stringing up long rows of miscellaneous criminals; now hanging a housebreaker..."
but no.

12th Sep 2007, 15:18

Jane Doe says:

that was me! TOTC is in B&W; too...
this whole game is making me feel totallly inadequate : (
EDIT - and of course the wrong weapon of choice. Thinking some surreal take on Dick Turpin now

12th Sep 2007, 15:22

hildegard says:

True, but almost any B&W; film you haven't seen in a while takes on colour in the memory. (Doesn't it?)

12th Sep 2007, 15:27

mat says:

I am going to kick myself when someone gets this. I know I've seen this, but I really can't remember what it is...

12th Sep 2007, 15:27

hildegard says:

Heheheh...
(Small rubbing of hands, as if with glee....)

12th Sep 2007, 15:30

taniwha says:

Why do I feel I saw this sometime after midnight in my late teens?

12th Sep 2007, 15:48

Jane Doe says:

Carry on Dick?
Not that any of you luminaries will have seen that, of course. And Hildegard certainly wouldn't own it to take screen-grabs. Just thought I'd lower the tone

12th Sep 2007, 15:54

hildegard says:

Splutter! Sadly, no - all my Carry On films are on obsolete media... ;)

12th Sep 2007, 15:56

nige says:

that third pic is throwing me off.

12th Sep 2007, 15:59

Jane Doe says:

Obsolete Media would be a great blog title : )
Can you hurl a pointy stick in my direction please? About time I started to regain my work ethic...

12th Sep 2007, 15:59

hildegard says:

Taniwha - because that's when all the Odd Films were on & what's been posted lately that isn't Odd has certainly been oddly presented. :)

JD - Oh, I dunno - have you got a film studies type module this year? You could think of this as just getting your eye in...
Too early in the season for work ethic - this is your leisurely amble back into the grove of academe. The only useful course of action is to try to get a headstart on books - turn up early for registration & go directly to the library, do not pass coffee shop... ;)

Nige - If you say so. :)

12th Sep 2007, 16:27

Helen says:

Um. I am no good at any of these.

The Madness of King George?

Shrug.

12th Sep 2007, 16:30

nige says:

i keep thinking Peter Shaffer.

Amadeus.

12th Sep 2007, 16:34

hildegard says:

Helen - about 40 or 50 years earlier.
Not that that will help much. Just thought I'd mention...

Nige - It's just the ballroom scene that's doing that to you. ;)

12th Sep 2007, 16:42

Again you art house types are stumping me silly. For the first pic I thought it was A Chinese Ghost Story but then the ballroom and the rest ... Gosh I don't know - a Bergman flick?

12th Sep 2007, 16:54

hildegard says:

Ya reckon? Am looking forward to pics of you & Mat booting yourselves silly in a wee while... ;)

12th Sep 2007, 16:57

Grumble.. head hurts.. grrr... ouch... *blurgh* ... don't know.

12th Sep 2007, 17:00

Rich says:

The first picture reminds me of Total Recall. The second picture looks like the video of Ashes to Ashes transposed onto Q*Bert. Third and forth... I have no clue.

I have no clue. Is it European?

that'll narrow it down.

12th Sep 2007, 17:01

hildegard says:

Yep, European, oh go on then - British.

12th Sep 2007, 17:02

nige says:

dang. it's not Dracula is it?

12th Sep 2007, 17:03

hildegard says:

Hang on a sec - where's the tricorn hat in Total Recall? Did I miss a Director's Cut?

12th Sep 2007, 17:03

hildegard says:

Nige, you're right, it's not Dracula.

12th Sep 2007, 17:04

nige says:

bugger.

12th Sep 2007, 17:05

Can I just say - I completely agrre with Nige - Bugger, bugger, bugger.

12th Sep 2007, 17:08

MaggieD says:

Baron Munchausen?

12th Sep 2007, 17:11

Rich says:

I'm getting Gilliamy vibes off it too, but I don't think it's Der Baron*. Nnngh.

*unless it is, in which case I do.

12th Sep 2007, 17:12

hildegard says:

Ignore all my previous posts & only consider these.
Chance your arm...

12th Sep 2007, 17:12

hildegard says:

That hat's far too clean for the Baron, sorry Maggie.

12th Sep 2007, 17:13

taniwha says:

Could it be a Peter Greenaway film?

12th Sep 2007, 17:17

hildegard says:

Oh god, I'd love to see Peter Greenaway drunk enough to make this. :)

12th Sep 2007, 17:24

mat says:

it's not The Devils, is it?

12th Sep 2007, 17:28

swamprose, nli says:

this one is really hard. I have no idea this time, H. sorry. chance your arm? is that a clue or anagram?

12th Sep 2007, 17:35

hildegard says:

Nope, not the Devils.

12th Sep 2007, 17:41

I'm going to work. If no one has got this by tomorrow...

Evil Hildegard...

12th Sep 2007, 17:43

hildegard says:

Dear me, this is proving more of a puzzle than anticipated.
The pistols at dawn scene is a worthy heir to the Duellists...
Yes, SR - it was a rather small clue though.

12th Sep 2007, 17:44

paintist says:

doesnt look like black bess in the bottom pic....but is it something to do with Dick turpin?

12th Sep 2007, 17:54

nige says:

Barry Lyndon

12th Sep 2007, 17:55

paintist says:

like your thinking nige

12th Sep 2007, 18:01

nige says:

yeah i've nailed it i reckon. come on!

12th Sep 2007, 18:06

paintist says:

the highwayman with oliver reed? 1951 ( just to carry on guessing, but I think nige has it )

12th Sep 2007, 18:10

Helen says:

Told you I was clueless.

Les Liaisons Dangereuses?

12th Sep 2007, 18:13

hildegard says:

One so hates to disappoint but, regretfully, no to both, Paintist.
Although there's a distinct warmth to your way of thinking...
Nige - you know, I've never seen BL. Bits & bobs, of course, but not the whole thing. /shameful admission.

12th Sep 2007, 18:15

hildegard says:

Nothing like so understated, Helen. ;)

12th Sep 2007, 18:17

nige says:

arrrrgggh! your clues fell in line so well too.

12th Sep 2007, 18:21

paintist says:

what is the soundtrack like?

12th Sep 2007, 18:24

hildegard says:

That's not hinting, it's describing, P. :)

12th Sep 2007, 18:27

paintist says:

how about colours....do colours feature in the title?

12th Sep 2007, 18:32

hildegard says:

Nope, definitely cooling off now...

12th Sep 2007, 18:33

paintist says:

drat.....

12th Sep 2007, 18:35

paintist says:

any muskateering?

12th Sep 2007, 18:39

hildegard says:

Not in any accepted sense of the word.
No muskrats either, come to that.

12th Sep 2007, 18:40

nige says:

Plunkett & Maclean!

12th Sep 2007, 19:05

Rich says:

I've only just realised the top picture is "upside down". That's why it looked Total Recall. P&M; is another sounds-like-a-good-guess. Bastards.

12th Sep 2007, 19:34

hildegard says:

Plunkett & Maclean it is. :)
Not exactly art house. I do have a soft spot for it though.
How did you get there?

12th Sep 2007, 19:52

nige says:

yes!

when you said paintist was getting warm with dick turpin & the highwayman it got me to thinking away from barry lyndon and onto something more recent. i have to agree, i like it :)

12th Sep 2007, 20:06

mat says:

Ah. I see. Not made 40 or 50 years before The Madness of King George, set 40 or 50 years before.

Now I get it. *facepalm*

12th Sep 2007, 20:13

Jane Doe says:

*rolls eyes* so near and yet so far : (
well done, nige

H - The Eagleton book was for this year's film course - on cultural/social/political ideology, as represented by film ...

12th Sep 2007, 20:50

nige says:

*beats chest

i'm brewing a new 'un.

12th Sep 2007, 20:52

Fucking Plunkett & Maclean?????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Shit... You threw me with the 50 - 40 years thing as well.. One is, indeed, kicking oneself...

Nige. You be the blooming king of this!

13th Sep 2007, 00:34

hildegard says:

Apologise for the date confusion, did wonder but reckoned it was clearly not of that vintage. Obviously clear as mud. Sorry.
