Linux!
Seriously though (although I am serious about the linux bit), recent versions of the Storm worm (google it) actually modify (they call it 'braindeading') your virus scanner, so it can't see it.
well, it doesn't mean you have Storm. there's not even any reason to think this might be connected to Storm, but as it can, in some cases, be invisible, you can't rule out having it.
are your virus checkers right up to date? like, today up to date?
Yeh, updated daily, every day for as long as I can remember.
Do any of these mean anyhting to you, Mat?

Thanks.
Not hugely, although the first link suggests virus. Are you running Windows 2K? SQL Server? Have you rebooted?
If the answers are no/yes, no, yes - you may have a virus/worm/other malware. Stress, very much, on 'may'. Next thing I'd be doing would be backing up all my stuff and reinstalling windows. Or installing linux, so this kind of crap just stops happening to me... :)
Ah. In that case, you may have a virus. You may not, of course, but I'd still be backing up my stuff if I were you. Then I'd reinstall Windows (it's really not that bad a job), and seriously consider trying out linux
I backup regulary, but have backed up again.
Finding the Windows CD will be a mission in this place.
I know nothing about computers, but will look into Linux.
Thanks for your help :)
the link I made repeatedly above will go to a page where you can download a CD which will boot into linux direct from the CD - so you can try it out without installing anything to your computer.
give it a go. you might like it - quite a lot of people here have been converted to linux.
Ok, cheers again. Yeh I've seen quite a few peoples posts saying how good it is etc. Can you not get viruses on that then?
I should just buy a Mac when this one gives up on me.
linux viruses are very rare, and the whole system is set up in such a way that contracting them is much more difficult.
it's worth a look, certainly.
I'm with mat on this one. Linux is very secure, and is now very easy to use.
Looks to me like, if you're going to stay with windows, you'll need to rebuild the machine anyway...
