fluxbox, while nice, is a little too minimal for my tastes, but it's good on very low end systems. See also Openbox, IceWM, etc. etc.
You know you can try out all these window managers on your everyday ubuntu install? Just apt-get them, and they should then appear as options in your GDM login screen (look at the 'sessions' menu)
