Apparently the airline overbooks flights because there are always some people who don't show up and normally it works out fine.

I find it very strange as well.

Yeah, basically they overbook (if demand is there) every single flight by about 20%, as there is ordinarily a no-show/late arrival of passengers at around the same percentage. This of course allows them to make about 20% extra on every flight, and on those rare occasions when everyone turns up on time, they dish out a bit of cash and a hotel night stay.

Bloody criminal if you ask me.
