I'm sure you can just tip it up a little higher, maybe put a board with a 10- or 20-degree angle underneath it as a shim and adjust your math accordingly.... Mandy and I have already been discussing elsewhere a patent for a new design, gyroscopically stabilized with a built-in GPS and digital compass, with stepping servomotors to keep the thing pointing at Polaris, even if it's strapped to your wrist. And maybe a glass dome over the top with an LED to shine down on the gnomon when the sun is behind the clouds....

It is beautiful. It's like the Golden Compass from the books, except it actually does something useful.

Better pictures are posted -->here<--. It took so long for the pics from my camphone to show up I got impatient and took pics with the Kodak EasyShare thingy to transfer to the computer and e-mail in. I'm not regretting it. Those pics are quite a bit better.
