These are wave or "pancake" clouds, indicative of cold, very high winds aloft. They often presage severe storms in mountain areas. Amazing pictures and colours.

Euphro - I was looking around at other photos of clouds and these seem closer to photos I am seeing labeled as lenticular clouds (altocumulus standing lenticularis) than wave clouds.

Although the wikipedia page on lenticular clouds does mention them in association with wave clouds.

So, do you think they might be lenticulars?

I actually emailed APOD to offer it as a submission.
