Hello World!
Originally from the UK, I now live in the north of Sweden with Crickson
We are scientists :)
I also knit, bake and play the recorder, but not all at once.

Want to find out about proteins? Try this for starters -
RCSB Protein data bank: Molecule of the Month in alphabetical order
Want to find out what is known about any particular gene? Here's a good place to start. -
Entrez Gene This is probably my favourite starting point for finding out about a new gene of interest and has handy links to most of the references and sequence information.
Want to find a piece of peer-reviewed scientific research? Want to check the references from an article, or look up the publication record of an expert quoted in a newspaper or blog piece? Try this database. It will give you the abstract (outline) of every paper and will link to the full thing and tell you which articles are free and open-access. -
NCBI's PubMed All newly published research is quickly added to this site.
Want to be able to decode DNA? This is how DNA codes for protein, and is, to my eyes, a thing of beauty. -
The Genetic Code (presented here as RNA. For DNA, simply replace the U's with T's (Uracil with Thymine)).
And for geeks who need to get out more :) -

wow, RI sounds exciting! tell all!
would love to come up, and who knows, i just might...
Cool! When do you guys fly to this side of the pond? May have to try and make a RI/NY/Boston trip this year.
Let me know how you get on!
I wish I could :(
but will be in the air.. hopefully... or very depressed if it doesn't go down
Have a great night and blog lots
and i have to find out about it in such a public manner! You are leaving me after all these years and this is how you treat me!
want me to do some cooking? Are you allowed to serve your own grub in the pub?
Oh no! You're leaving. I mean good for you, is this the emigration plan or just a sojourn?
I'm really sorry, but I won't be able to come to your leaving do. We already have plans with tickets bought and paid for.
Let us know more about your plans won't you?
Yeah I think we'll be about unpacked by then so should make a walk up to that.
I actually had a dream about you leaving now I remember. I was bimbling through town and came across you in a queue waiting to board your flight! Ash left without saying goodbye! but you didn't! I think in my dream you were maybe joining the army.
Nope, tickets booked and bought for theatre in Amsterdam that weekend.
Hope you all have a lovely time and good luck in the states.
One of these days I'll make it to one of these.
Sorry.
if lots of us turn up we can kidnap them and prevent them from leaving, we can keep them locked up in my garage. Then i can visit them when ever i want to.
I won't be a mean captor, i will feed them and let Crickson have a wii when he needs to.
I was planning another trip to Leeds, will have a chat to Dave and see if we can make it that weekend .... I pretty sure we can :)
Ah, Beth. Sometimes you are in my dreams too. You're not joining the army, but you do sometimes wear a uniform.
you are leaving the centre of the universe?
I am pretty certain there are NO mushy peas in RI, so eat your fill now.
hello rhode island! and welcome to my time zone.
Wow! It'll be really great to see you all that can make it - Maggie we really must have a proper chat this time :)
And Sean, many happy returns for the day after the night before :)
And Nige - fingers crossed! If you need a place to stay overnight you'll be very welcome.
There will be cake, I'm not sure yet what else there will be.
FF - I'm really very sorry for the manner of your finding out but I thought I would see you first, then it was just getting to late in the day so we thought we'd better post and get told off later. We'd love to be kept prisoner in your garage too (it has a very fine reputation!) but Crickson really does need to work if he's ever going to make that breakthrough on your giant malteser... And if we don't go you'll have to find somewhere else to come on holiday, but we will miss you a lot.
Looking forward to seeing you all soon or at some point in the future anyway :)
Still a bit sad that we can't make it.... are you going to leave some contact details...and carry on moblogging?
We're sorry you can't come too but we'll definitely keep moblogging - this might even give me a good excuse to get a 'proper' camera :)
We've both set up gmail email addresses and will put up further contact details when we know them.
Things are a little complicated as Ash's job is split between Rhode Island an Michigan. The 1st 6-8 weeks will be in RI, then the next 6 months will be in Michigan, then back to RI for the rest of the 2 years. I can't say for sure where I will be when in all this yet, it depends on how long it takes me to find a job so that I can get a visa too. We should be sorted out by October at least!
Kingston and Houghton. A bit smaller I think :) RI looks managably small though, so we'll not be far from Providence there, not so sure where Houghton is - I think it's on the edge of one of the lakes, near the top somewhere. There looks like there will be a lot of skiing there, as there are a lot more ski runs than footpaths nearbyy!
Lotsa skiing! Halfway between Duluth, Minnesota and Sault Sainte Marie Ontario, due south of Thunder Bay, Houghton is. But you'll be there for the summer months, and then heading back to R.I. for the winter, lucky yous.
I'm going to have a go at baking too.
I've found an enticing recipe for eggless banana loaf and I have the bananas sitting on the fridge with express orders to ripen. Maybe some chocolate or coffee muffins too. I have spent a lot of time thinking about this.
Oh wow! That would be brilliant! Thank you very much. I think FF might be having a bit of a bake too if we're very good and very lucky...
Looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow :)
Factotum> Yeah, looks like I'll miss the ski season in north Michigan, but I still hope to make the most of the hills and lakes.
I'm very happy to see so many of you coming! I look forward to seeing you all tomorrow.
Thank you everyone for coming it was brilliant to see you all. I'm sorry I didn't get much of a chance to chat to maggie or Helen : (
