PITTERLICKING

The rain held off until we left the school - as soon as we got outside, it
bucketed down. We were, however, undaunted, and proceeded with our
litterpick. All the children worked very hard for almost an hour (and they
didn't want to stop but we ran out of time!) A Community Support Officer
from the police helped us out, and altogether we filled half a dozen bags
full of rubbish. The school will do the litterpick on a monthly basis, and
involve other children from years 3, 4, and 5, so an excellent result there. (photos published with permission)

Great series, Para, I really like these shots. That's quite the litter force you have there. Love that last shot, like litter musketeers. :)

these dudes are far more enthusiastic than their older counterparts in the big school! let's hope it continues throughout their lives!

You've got to get them when they are young. There's the best chance it will stick and make a difference.

yes, the teacher and I discussed this yesterday. We've always made sure our children dispose of their litter correctly, but it's no good on its own if they're going to school and their peers couldn't care less, so it's good that the school has the same attitude. The kids can go and get a litterpicker and bag at any time and do the school grounds, which they cover daily.

What a great project, get them while they're young, indeed. My kids could no sooner throw down a crisp packet than stab themselves with an old spoon.
I'm amazed by the ease with which some kids discard rubbish without a thought.
Especially in the UK.

And in the rain too! What stars. It seems that at the age, they have such a strong sense of what's right. Good on ya for capitalising on it.

Brilliant. I expect they are very thorough too.

Me and my neighbours organised a sponsored pick up litter by the riverbank when we were all still in primary school. No litterpics. No supervision. Wouldn't be allowed now, except there weren't any organisers, just the kids. We got lots and lots of rubbish and didn't cheat by bulking it up (most of the sponsorship was fixed anyway). It was quite satisfying.

Always astounds me to see people throw rubbish on to the streets. And why on earth do people trek out to the countryside only to litter it with their cans and nappies? Surely it's spoiling the very thing they've bothered to come out and see. They'd soon stop enjoying it if it turned into another rubbish dump.

WHAT??? KIDS PICKING LITTER BY THEMSELVES??? Where's your risk assessment? You wouldn't have been insured if you'd died of litter poisoning, etc etc bloody nanny state!
