hildegard says:

Sweet jesus, that's the best refutation of Beardsley's theory of art that I've seen in a long while.

I agree. Facial expressions are priceless.

But what is the bird saying?

hildegard says:

No, sorry P, my bosom does not return an echo to this in any possible Beardslian sense. Do you have any context or can we hope it's merely ludic? Or some locally banal decorative motif - "What, the chicken-on-the-head statues? Doesn't every city have them?"

hahaha...yes I dont know who looks the most surprised :-)

Hildegard It was on a very decorative building but not with any sign of what it was.....perhaps this is an allegorical figure...Dawn?
cockrels crowing are a bad sign....but hens ( this looks like a hen) is even worse I think :-)
a linky to crowing based article from 1800s

OR.....A whitling woman and a crowing hen are neither fit for god nor men

traditionally considered unnatural and improper activities for females, and that females who perform them are unnatural and ill-omened. The earliest recorded version of this proverb is Scottish, and dates from 1721: "A crooning cow, a crowing Hen and a whistling Maid boded never luck to a house" ("Complete Collection of Scottish Proverbs, Explained and made Intelligible to the English Reader", by J Kelly.) LOL! *is Scottish and finds this very funny indeed*

Great pic. I think the surprise is entirely apposite, on both sides.
