what network are you using for MMS? We have issues with some operators so the solution cited above is a good one when experiencing this issue.

It was from T-Mobile, and the version sent to my email account had loads of bumph, with the body as an attachment.

That's the issue, body as attachment from Tmobile and o2 - try the method on the Spam help page.
