A day off

For the last week, I've been buried under 12 hour days of writing following a diary panic - I have no spare days for about three weeks. Hit Friday with two pieces sent off for comment. Day off today - games with the kids, sorting out a new washing machine, car boot sale and coffee and £1 second hand Sheckley novel in the back garden. Haven't read Sheckley for twenty years. This is a day with a clear conscience.

Thank you all. Did feel very deserved. This busy time will pass ... eventually.

not one of sheckley's best, i note-anyway he's better at short stories rather than novels. still, ther's nothing that goes better with a day off than a book

I agree. He has a tendency to float off with the fairies with the longer ones though i have a soft spot for Options which is an example of the type.

His short stories do pack more of a punch - remember teh one about the restaurant written from three perspectives?

Ooh, you lucky duck. Well deserved indeed. Enjoy!

yes, it's in a collection called "do you feel anything when i do this?". i looked for it for years until, by chance, i saw a hardback copy at a school fair for $1.50. was so happy to get it as it has my favourite sheckley short story-"cordle to onion to carrot"

oh, by the way, a good shecley novel is "the game of x". unusually, its a james bond-ish parody rather than sci-fi, but full of the same kind of humour:

"he pulled a gun on me so i refrained from leaping over the desk and killing him with me bare hands"

I seem to remember getting 'do you feel anything when I do this' out of Mangere Town Centre library ... after I had exhausted your collection of Sheckley.

I'll see if I can find 'Game of X.' I found a stash of Sheckley at Hay on Wye but the cost of them was a little high. I'll keep my eyes peeled at my local charity shop.

I seem to remember enjoying The Alchemical Marriage of Alistair Crompton quite a lot. I wonder if it would hold up so any years later.
