Annual Round the Island Race. Lots of different boats including some nice
wooden classics.

Unfortunately the classic I was on, a 1960 Uffa Fox One Design - Mary Lunn
had to retire after the shrouds ripped out of the deck, about 40 minutes
from the start. Luckily the mast didn't break and there were no injuries.

good to hear there were no injuries but that must be so disappointing.

Mr P says..."Shrouds coming away is pretty terminal - they hold up the mast so it pretty well always comes down so you were very lucky !!!"

Hehe... well at least you would have seen the first boats finish. And it happens to the best of them - the yacht lewis hamilton crashed into lost its mast.

I think if the mast had been made of carbon fibre we would have lost it, but wood is a pretty cool material. Looked like a fishing rod until we could get pressure off it by dropping the sails. Had a yawl rig, so could sail back with the 'other' mast.
