The Imperials Are Attacking!
These are large cargo cranes, they look like strange mechanic horses... and do look like they could stride across the landscape and destroy all before them.
There's inspiration for the TIE Fighters in the bay too.

because i told him ;) I did a biography on george lucas for an assignment a few years ago, and it's mentioned in some interviews i read of his. he lives in marin county (half hr away) and used to sit on the docks of oakland with a sketchbook and sketches things he saw in the bay (like ships and stuff) and he said the cranes were his inspiration for the walkers
