once a year, just to check things are working as they should, the BBC unplug their feeds from London to each of the transmitters around the country, and leave in just the feed to the Crystal Palace transmitter in south London. As a backup, every other transmittter starts to rebroadcast its nearest other transmitter - so here in Glasgow, the signal gets bounced right up the country from Croydon, and yet is still pretty watchable.
They just do it with a testcard so that there's a standard picture to compare things with.
