Random, translucent panels from Floyd Gottfredson's MICKEY MOUSE comic
strip on their vinyl purses, apparently.

I went shopping with my sister the other day, and we found a big
standalone display of Mickey bags -- from wallets to big purses.I can
certainly understand a handbag company wanting to cash in on Mickey
merch, but why use material from an ancient newspaper comic that's
almost never been reprinted in our lifetimes?

I think it's because the trend started out as a DIY one that was coopted when it got popular, so people were making purses from "deconstructed" textbooks or putting the covers of pulp novels on each side. The things in vinyl were often Cheetos bags or something like that, but old magazine clippings and then newspaper comics got popular too. At least that's what i'm guessing is going on, because I was aware of the websites to make your own versions and then I started seeing them in stores, rather than the other way around. But I'm not very fashion-aware and could be totally wrong.
