black squirrel

It's not a great photo (this one hasn't learned yet to keep still for
cameras. It's new.), but the black squirrels are starting to come out
again. I don't know how common black squirrels are elsewhere, but
here in The Bronx the story is that a breeding pair of black squirrels
from Canada was dropped off onto the grounds of the Bronx Zoo in the

They bred. You know, like squirrels. Black squirrels are pretty rare
outside the NYC area until you get WAY out there, closer to the
Canadian border (that's about a 7 hour drive from NYC).

NYC squirrels in general are huge hams. They will do anything if they
think they'll be fed. But the black ones are especially friendly.
Anyway, just some random neighborhood wildlife-- we get a *LOT* of
squirrels here, both gray and black.

My girlfriend and I got chased around the cloisters in a rather menacing way by a whole stack of these little bastards. Was quite funny, until there was more than ten of them. Very tame indeed.

You were menaced by squirrels at The Cloisters?

Why does this stuff never happen to me, dammit? Me? They just come up and say "Yo. You got anything good?" and sometimes I do, and sometimes I don't. But they hang out and say "Nice Chucks." and scamper off and do squirrel things.

Bloody hell, do black squirrels really exist? There are a series of children's books in the UK called the Depford Mice that has a black squirrel in it... and I thought it was fiction.... Does Oscar the trash muppet really exist too?

*LOL*! Yes black squirrels really exist. Honest. We have lots of them here. I can take photos of others as I spot them if you like.

And Oscar was always my favorite muppet.

i i feed alot of squirrels in central park from 63rd to 58th st central park side and to 7th ave. i began because a home maybe 7 black squirrels were starving and my love grew from there. they are so good but seem a bit sickly ie some need nuts cracked a bit blind or large spots with no hair. i love them and try to feed and water them every day. my favorite "shorty" a baby this year was named because he had a bunny rabbit tail was the happiest squirrel you could ever know. last week he became very ill and 3 of us with a park worker tried to get him to no avail. i was going to take him to a vet and find a rehabilitator. the next day he was gone like so many sick ones. i think they go into their trees to die. i miss shortie and i cried for a little black happy squirrel who enriched my life and made me smile in this mess of a world

We have lots of black squirrels in the UK in hertfordshire, bedfordshire and a bit further afield. They are very friendly and very entertaining to watch!

Toronto Canada is teeming wth black squirrels. I would say that 99 out of 100 squirrels you see here are black. They are EVERYWHERE!
