Theyre pretty good yeah - Brin can get a bit plodding at times, but the Uplift Trilogy is a good read, apart from the talking monkeys of course. There's a scene in one of the books based in a monkey community, most specifically in a monkey strip joint. utterly terrifying.

Okay monkey communities might be a bit much for even me.

nono, very serious, and superbly crafted - it's just that the entire premise is based upon humans ability to 'uplift' their earthbound peers such as chimps and dolphins to full tool using sapience, There is a lot of interesting writing around the species and character possibilities Brin has extrapolated from different animal species./

Hmmm..maybe one for the future. But I'm still gonna have a hard time taking those monkeys seriously.
