Several hurt in London Underground explosion

Press Association
Thursday July 7, 2005

Several people have been injured after a reported explosion on the London Underground today.

Emergency services were called to Liverpool Street station after reports of an explosion shortly before 9am.

British Transport police said the incident, which was reported at 8.49am between Liverpool Street and Aldgate stations on the Metropolitan line, was believed to have been caused by a collision between two trains, a power cut or a power cable exploding.

A London Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "We have just sent some resources out to the scene. We have sent a number of vehicles to Liverpool Street station."

Article continues
BTP confirmed there were "walking wounded", and said paramedics had responded to one report of a person classed as "life at risk".

"There are walking wounded, but that is as much as we know at the moment," a spokesman said.

He confirmed that the incident had taken place on the Metropolitan line between Aldgate and Liverpool Street and said the line had been evacuated. King's Cross, Liverpool Street and Aldgate stations have also been cleared.

Hope this is ok to post whole areticles -

"Several people have been injured after explosions blamed on a power surge led to the whole London Underground network being closed down.

British Transport Police said some of the power surges had caused explosions.

Surges took place at Aldgate, Edgware Road, King's Cross, Old Street and Russell Square stations.

A spokesman said there were "walking wounded" at Liverpool Street station but one person's life was reported to be "at risk".

London Fire Brigade said four crews were at Liverpool Street and more were on their way.

A British Transport Police spokesman said that emergency services were dealing with reports of an explosion at 0849 BST on the Metropolitan Line between Liverpool Street and Aldgate.

One passenger, who had left the Tube at Fenchurch Street Station, and walked to Aldgate East, told BBC Five Live that he saw injured people.

"As I walked through the bus station I could see people lying on the ground, black, as if they'd been covered in smoke. There were about three or four people on the floor being treated."

Eyewitness Paul Woloszyn from BBC News, who was at Blackhorse Road station on the Victoria Line, said: ""We were told there was a bomb at Liverpool Street station.

"I was on the Tube, and they stopped the train and told everyone to get off an evacuated the station."

He said staff had said the entire Tube network had been affected, and leaflets had been handed out with details of alternative bus routes.

Another eyewitness, Dorothy Molloy, had been on a Tube train at King's Cross and said "staff just chucked everyone out of the station".

She said staff there had not given any details, but she said two passengers she had spoken to had said they had received messages saying there had been bombs.

"People didn't really know what was going on, they were just huffing and puffing and saying how annoying it was," she said.

"People don't seem to be panicked, but there's so many police and ambulances coming into the areas. People are just concerned, and some are just annoyed at the delay."

From Sky News; " According to reports a bus has exploded in central London just minutes after a number of blasts on London's Underground.

"I saw lots of people running up a road and then saw the top of a bus destroyed," one eyewitness told Sky News.

Sky News producer Bob Mills said he heard the loud explosion near Euston Station.

Scotland Yard could not confirm reports of an explosion on a bus in Russell Square. A spokeswoman said police were at the scene and attempting to determine what had happened."

Advice for people in and around London

The following advice has been issued by the emergency services to people in London today

· Stay where you are

Stock market fell by 180 points as news came in but has recovered. Although it has dropped it is now within the realms of normal trading :) No sense of financial panic

I was in the thick of it outside Kings Cross... police were shouting at us to take the nearest side street off of Euston road. Luckily I ignored them... they were sending us towards Russell Square.

Friend who works in Canary Wharf reports that a terroist has been shot there... it's not been officially reported and is word of mouth so may not be completely true. But then officially we were told that it was just power surges... hmmm.

7th Jul 2005, 14:06

Glad to hear it Kostika. Is that everyone you were waiting to hear from?

7th Jul 2005, 14:06

I heard on the news that there was an 'incident' at canary wharf. No-one new much about it though.

Might be useful to people - apparently (Sky News) the river boat services along the thames are free to use (and free of charge) if people need to get around.

Hi Daz,

the site is in Hebrew so I doubt it will help you. There was an article about the alternative to the main news sites, in the form of bloggers "reporting live", very interesting. Many translated quotes from the moblog blogs.
Article is in http://www.ynet.co.il/articles/0,7340,L-3109478,00.html
/> but again, it's in hebrew (you can see the "trapped" picture in there).
English version of site is http://www.ynetnews.com but this article doesn't appear there.
Are you all ok? How are people handling this...?

four explosions causing damage at seven sites. If you think about it that seems a reasonable assessment. If the bombs go off between stations the blast will be funnelled down the tunnels to affect two stations. Three underground blasts = six stations + bus outside BMA looking on the underground map you can see this probably what happened. However, I'm now left with the thought if this was four bombs how much worse would it have been if there had actually been seven. IIRC there were four blasts in Madrid (I'd need to look that up) and there were four planes on 9/11, now there are four here. I'm wondering what is the significance of four. The al qaeda statement makes me want to start a site like the sorry world one with people showing they are not "burning with fear, terror and panic". The only trouble is that there are those who would miss the point and think it was anti-islam. What is the world coming to? *sighs*

On FOUR trains according to the BBC

7th Jul 2005, 15:25

Apparenty one of the bombs affected 3 trains - it blasted through the wall of the tunnel, hitting another train.

"At least 33 people have been killed and hundreds injured after at least seven blasts on the underground network and a double-decker bus in London."

Kostika: you were asking for a date correlation. I don't think it's a date correlation per se, but I am seeing a pattern in the numbers themselves. (I could send this to Cassiudrow and he could crunch this even more-- finding these patterns is very much his thing.)

Terrorists seem to like prime numbers and numbers divisible by 3, which is the magic number in many cultures that allow for mysticism.
