it doesn't look very destroyed...

freshlegs says:

it was bought by a family last year. they have been renovating it since. thieves stole the original 16th century fittings, posing as workmen. the leadlight and stained glass windows are being replaced by plate glass. the entire thing is being made bland as bland can be. they may as well have knocked the thing down and built something modern in its place.

seems strange to buy a castle and then turn it into a house...

Where is the castle?

freshlegs says:

I don't think it strictly is a castle, but, well, I call it that. Just like I call it mine.

It's in Hampstead. Directly across the street from where I live.

Helen says:

I'd call it a castle too. It has towers, after all.

well, my grandmother used to live there (to show you i tell the truth the address is 1 lyndhurst terrace nw3) and i spent just about every sunday of my childhood there. wonderful stained glass in the lavatory (st stephen), but that's probably gone now.

by the way its victorian gothic, not c16; built for his own use by the man who designed the stained glass in the church in church row.

Wow! I envy you. It used to be a beautiful place.

And it's good to hear some facts about its origin. The police circulated a report to the surrounding houses (including where I lived) that said it was 16th century. That surprised me, and though I was a little suspicious, I believed it because it came from the police. Ha!
