"And as you cross the circle line,
Well the ice wall creaks behind
You're a rabbit on the run.
And the silver splinters fly
In the corner of your eye,
Shining in the setting sun.
Well do you ever get the feeling
That the story's too damn real
And in the present tense.
Or that everbody's on the stage
And it seems like you're the only
Person sitting in the audience

Skating away, skating away, skating away On the thin ice of the new day"

On Such A Windy Day

I've been stalking a pair of Northern Flickers. Stalking basically consists of hanging out on the deck and various parts of the yard with a blanket over my head for 4 to 6 hours.

It is very windy today, winds around 50mph. We've been losing tree limbs and I've been listening to a 35 foot limb on one of cottonwoods cracking all day. While out stalking, I caught this little chickadee dealing with wind gusts while holding fastly to his cottonwood seed.

Thanks. :) I'll try and have Rick take one this weekend. I've been 'training' myself for the last month or so. I sit in a corner of the deck, no cover and wait for the birds. Learning to be still when flies and skeeters are on you is a skill. ;D The birds are becoming accustomed to me.

Cover is required for the more difficult subjects. These Red-shafted Northern Flickers are killin' me. I got another incredibly lousy, bad, terrible and awful shot of one today. Later, I was standing on the deck shooting Harriet the Woodpecker when one flew by about 6 inches above the ground at top speed. It was like seeing a phoenix, all liquid gold and fire. Oh well. Patience. Lots and lots of frelling patience.

I know from my terrible bird shots just how good you are. I stalk plants. They don't move.

Thank you. :) I love your plant stalking, it pays off. This Northern Flicker is starting to get to me. I saw it again, not an hour ago. It flew in fast and low right over the deck, looped and took off. I felt like banging my head into the wall.

I'm going back to looking at everyone else's wonderful shots.

Thank you, that helps. I've been trying for 2 years. One of these days...

I like the second to last photo. It looks like he's hanging on to the branch with chewing gum!

Hahaha. Thanks. It does look silly, but it gives a good idea of the wind that day.
