This house is part of the Bata shoe factory site in East Tilbury and provided living accommodation for the factory workers. Set out apparently in a chequerboard fashion to encourage healthy and influenced by the layout at Letchworth Garden City. Built by Czech Thomas Bata, the first factory and village houses were erected in 1933 there was also an Hotel a cinema and recreation facilities including a pool, (sadly now demolished.) the factory building itself is Grade II listed and plans have been considered in a recent South East Thurrock master plan to consider the possibility of turning it into apartments or work live units for creative businesses!
Photographing it gave me a huge sense of foreboding, derelict empty buildings scare me. It evoked the same feelings in me that I had some years ago when photographing the rundown derelict factories on the isle of dogs before Excel was there it felt like the aftermath of Hiroshima it was real spine tingling!
