OK.
Back in the last bits of summer one of my shots made it to a proper big-circulation magazine front cover. I was so delighted that I told the people at Jacobs (where Jeremy and I get all of our camerastuff). I had also been selected as UK champion in the Sony Ericsson Life Captured competition and mentioned that at the same time (I didn't make that big a deal of it as I had no expectations of getting any further). In conversation with the top Jacobs guy I also said that I felt I couldn't compete with the big newspaper photographers because they had cameras with ISO-millions and my D80, lovely little camera that it is, just didn't measure up.

So he asked if I'd like to borrow a D3 for a week. Would I?... Is the Pope Catholic?... Do bears sh*t in the woods? You bet I would..

I did. The first night I had to take photos at 1am in a low-lit milonga. Getting to grips with the beast was quite a struggle. A pleasure, but a struggle. It took me 90 minutes of playing (during which time I turned down dances with some of the most gorgeous tango dancers I've ever met) before I had any confidence that I'd have reasonable images of the performance.

I used it every day. Got to grips with it more-or-less on the fourth day. Organised the free-running photo call with Danny that week too. Sprocket borrowed my D80 while I was using the D3. Hence these shots.

I'm in love. What JCmillion feels for his new laptop has nothing on the way I feel for the D3..... Despite the fact that it would (will) take 3 months of intense weight training to get the strength to carry it around, it's wonderful. Even though the camera wasn't mine, every time I passed another person with an SLR I''d think with pleasure "I've got a bigger one than you" or words to that effect. I don't think I've ever felt that way about a 'thing' before, except possibly my very first brand new car!

Sadly I had to give it back. The logic of why I got the D80 still holds. It's the best camera that I can sensibly carry on the bike.

But I'm going to get the D3. It'll take a while because the thing's not cheap, the lenses aren't cheap either and that flash I'm cuddling is itself priced at well over £600.

*sighs
*plans
*works harder

(faved x3 - as a personal incentive as well as the fact I like the shots)

Wow, well done! I've used a D2x so I know what you mean about the weight - not a patch on a D3, though. I have a birthday coming up next week and I'm hoping for something special in this department with a "3" in the model number, but not a D3 :D

i'm a Canon follower myself (i don't evangelise over them though) and have a comparable body to your D80 with an expensive chunk of glass on the front (that cost more than the body) i did try out a 5D (think D200) and i can't wait to finally afford it. I got the same buzz holding it but sadly hand to hand it back.

I really like the top portrait.
