In my mind, Kerouac is in the same class as RIlke and Neruda and Khayyam -- not necessarily in quality or impact, but in such a universal appeal as to make it nearly embarrassing to be a fan. In Kerouac's case, though, his associations with the Beat movement alienated him from strait-laced society and keeps his audience more limited than he deserves....
My wife didn't know that this was my favorite Kerouac quote.
