There are loads of little shrines around the back streets where locals pray and burn incense. There are large coils that you attach your pray too and for as long as it burns Buddha will hear it. Which leads me to believe that if you give the temple more money for a bigger coil then you will be more in Buddhas favour. Sounds a bit "pay to Pray" to me, but maybe I am missing something.

Yeah lots of ash, after a day of seeing temples it kind of gets all over you.

(edit) is it sacred to leave the ash around or profane to clean it or something?
I'm really not sure, not that many people explain anything in English over here (Which is fair enough).
