On all the bus stops in leeds they have a number. if you text the number to 63876 (METRO) they text you back with the time of the next bus! brilliant!

if you happen to have a barcode scanner on your phone, can you scan the barcode rather than typing it?

seaneeboy says:

Hehe - I wouldn't know... I was about to say "That's really lazy" but then again, i've stored my main bus stops as text templates to save time ;)

seaneeboy says:

Oh, I'm not sure it would work, because the barcode is for the numbers apart from the leading "450", so it would be a bit fiddly.

Indeed, best thing they've done to the bus system in ages. hurrah!

I guess it's cheaper than putting a big LED display at every bus stop - but does it actually track where buses are, or just extrapolate from the timetable?

aaand i bet the bus company probably make a nice tidy profit from the texting number. i guess.

Teflon - I think it's just the timetable, I'm sure once the roads get busier again for winter it'll start to get a little less accurate!

Sponge - Oh so cynical! It's a free one actually :)

That *is* a great idea...it's just a shame these things take so long to catch on! I saw the barcode recognition thing being done in a meeting with some guys from BT well over a year ago and they reckoned within 6 months all tickets would be replaced by barcodes on your phone....how wrong were they!

The sms thing is really useful and they could quite easily track the buses too, if they cared that much!

What region of the country was this in? Travel West Midlands are crap, so we probably won't get it for another 5 years!

Hehe - that's bonkers Jaggysnake. When I was at strathclyde university in 98 they were doing 3G video calls on orange prototype phones, saying they'd be launching the next year :D

It's in Leeds, the service is by West Yorkshire Metro rather than First. WYM are brilliant, First are mince.

Tell me about it. First in Glasgow don't give change on their buses, and a few years ago, the fares were 97p, £1.07, etc.
