Gotcha!

Took my camera this morning and managed to get these shots of a dive-bombing seagull. It swooped down from one of those chimneys in the background of the top shot. Seems to be having fun, doesn't it?

Twiglet says:

Great capture!

I saw this programme on TV once about Ravens and the experts had to conclude that it is very likely birds sometimes fly just for fun. Well you would wouldn't you? I know I would..... : )

I wouldn't begrudge them having their fun if they didn't fly at high speed inches above my head! Or even, as happened last year, hit me on the head.

In this case there is a reason for their aggressiveness: they have nests to protect and I guess their instinct is to try to scare away any potential predators. I think they probably target me particularly because of the dog.

I've had to tidy up my first comment because I had some of the words in the wrong order... Imagine! I'm actually losing my mind for real.

When we were in Cornwall one time gulls stole my ice cream, it was terribly shocking. I had heard of it happening to toddlers but not to grown ups! I felt a complete fool...

AF, yes it is supposed to be good luck, but I'd still rather not be, thank you :) Fortunately (touch wood) I haven't been pooed on yet (not for quite a while anyway).

Caine, they are indeed. Thanks!

Twiglet, they are a real menace, aren't they?

Craft, thanks.

And thanks for the highlight.

That is just superb. What camera did you use Cariadus?

Euphro, thanks!

OJ, thanks. The camera is a little compact camera, Casio Exilim ex-z750. I like it because unlike many compact cameras it allows manual control of just about everything. I tried on programmed AE first but the shots were too blurry so switched to shutter priority with a shutter speed of 1/800th. The top shot was cropped slightly and small adjustment of curves in Photoshop but no major post processing.

Another great thing about the Exilim is that if you have it set up right there is almost no delay between pressing the shutter and taking the shot, which is a good thing when a seagull is hurtling towards you at high speed! Although the top shot might look as though it was hovering, it most certainly wasn't :)
