Better by far...

I won't eat margarine, neither would my mother or my grandmother. These butter spreads are margarine by another name and I won't eat them either. However, butter is a sod to deal with, like a brick in winter and like a patch of oil in summer so other members of my household prefer this stuff. Every time I make them a sandwich or spread them a piece of toast I am reminded of the poem that features in the film *The way to the stars* and includes the line *better by far*. In term time I get up extremely early and make packed lunches for BS and DD. My mother who was in the RAF during the last world war and loved the film *The way to the stars* would be delighted to hear me reciting this poem at 6.30 am...

Do not despair.........For Johnny-head-in-air;

He sleeps as sound.....As Johnny underground.

Fetch out no shroud....For Johnny-in-the-cloud;

And keep your tears....For him in after years.

Better by far..........For Johnny-the-bright-star,

To keep your head......And see his children fed.

John Pudney

(And for my Twisted Sister who knows this poem too....)

JokerXL says:

As I scrolled down here I half expected you to come out with this ditty;

Betty bought a bit of butter,
but the bit of butter Betty bought was bitter,
Betty bought a better bit of butter
than the bit of butter Betty bought before.

But only half expected.

only you Joker

My current obsession is the search for cheese made of soya milk. Does it exist? I'm not supposed to be doing dairy products (depending on who I choose to listen to) and really miss melted cheese

Joker your comment reminds me of yet another poem this time by by A A Milne called The King's Breakfast which I used to read to DD. The one about butter for the royal slice of bread..

Dhamaka, if it's made of soya milk then it just ain't cheese. It is a thing of should-not-existness, I'm sorry but it is.... : )

I have to admit to being a spread man myself, I'm afraid. It's just so much easier.

We once tried a vegan-type cheese where the makers had lovingly recreated the appearance and texture of the thin plastic cheese slice you get on burgers, but with none of the taste! It was rather vile... However there is a spread called Tofiti, which is tofu-based, and works like a cheese spread would, it comes in various flavours and is actually alright. Wasn't really my cup of tea but Crickson liked it enough to buy another pot of the stuff.

As for not eating dairy products, if you're not actually lactose-intolerant I'd take all advice with pinches of salt (though not too much salt obviously :) ). All things in moderation and all that.

Sorry Twiglet! Forgot whose blog I was on! I hadn't heard that poem/song before, now it makes me associate margarine with being a little sad and wistful.

Not quite the same as the version I know Marty

Betty Botter bought a bit of butter,
but the butter Betty botter bought was bitter butter,
so she bought a bit of better butter,
to make the bit of bitter butter better!
