Sense of smell

Following the operation BS's sense of smell is gradually coming back. He always buys me this perfume and yet he has never smelled it. He's still on loads of pills, he's still not allowed to lift and he's not allowed to mix for fear of catching a cold but his face when he smells something is a picture.

He stands outside just to smell the grass. He can smell food too and he is having a fine time just smelling the summer..

hildegard says:

Hm, returned sense of smell, avoiding upper respiratory infections & no lifting; had no idea one could get a nasal hernia... ;)

Seriously though, large cheers on that news, people don't always realise how miserable it is to lose one's sense of smell. I'd be thrilled witless in his place.

beth says:

yes, it's quite touching to hear!

Twiglet says:

Thanks, hildegard and Beth

We think the lifting thing is more to do with bending/leaning forward and the amount of pressure you can sometimes feel on your head and face while bending. He feels fine though I have to constantly stop him from doing the stuff he's always done.

It must seem so miraculous being able to smell and around here where there are farm animals and muck spreaders the smells aren't always nice!

Lovely to be able to smell those country smells again though, I bet! Glad he's doing well.

I buy Chanel No5 for MyOtherHalf too.

Twiglet says:

Thanks cariadus. I think No 5 is a bit of a favourite with the fellas...

cariadus says:

Sure is - hopefully it is with the recipients too :)

: )

We were cooking jacket potatoes filled with apple wood smoked cheese and grilled bacon just now. It smells heavenly in here so BS announces he thinks he's suffering from trapped wind. He turned those big brown eyes on me and said *every silver lining has a cloud....* Gee thanks BS.

JokerXL says:

Super!
Taste will come back too then!

8th Aug 2009, 19:36

Twiglet says:

Taste already is returning with worries about getting too tonka or getting moobs... You know what they say *A BS can't be too rich or too slim*!

Caine says:

That's marvelous news!

FilbertFox says:

Good news about BS getting all smelly again.

BB has an appalling sense of smell, and with his big nose and all!

8th Aug 2009, 21:27

Twiglet says:

Thanks Caine and FFox

Apart from BS not really being supposed to mix with anyone outside of the household we're having a fairly good time. Me joints are behaving themselves and we have a bit of August weather too. We are planning a picnic for tomorrow. : )

Oh, so that's the surgery he had. Don't recall if we were acquainted then, but I had a similar surgery a while back, and I recall well what it is like to regain the sense of smell! He may also find his sense of taste will become more sensitive, I did. Pre-surgery I could eat the spiciest foods, and I'd feel the heat but lose all of the subtlety. Now, I can not eat foods so spicey, they are quite overwhelming, but I can taste things much better.

. Thank you,Twiglet! For what? For your really special post. For me,in person, this is one of the best post, which I saw! Hugs and big smile for you! :D

9th Aug 2009, 08:18

Twiglet says:

Thanks Silar 31 and shitake.

His operation wasn't secret it was just that people who did know did not hesitate to tell us horror stories and it started getting to me a bit. We were told it probably wouldn't work, that it would be monstrously painful and that he would look like he's been kicked in the face by a shire horse. The op was to clear his sinuses, stretch his sinuses and to remove polyps from his nose. So far so good, he feels much better (he can breathe normally) and he didn't have a single visible bruise although he felt pretty tender on the inside.

It was only as we realised the op had probably been successful that we felt like sharing...

Thank you for your concern and advice. He has already noticed the spicy food thing!

Glad to see he's on the mend :)

FilbertFox says:

BB had something similar done, it cut down his snoring a bit (but now it is back as before) but no real alteration to his sense of smell or taste. Glad it is good for the BS though

9th Aug 2009, 09:40

Twiglet says:

Thanks Paul and again FFox. He rarely snored though, I'm the snorer, I actually wake myself up sometimes!

I am quite moved by the outpouring of concern and good wishes for the BS especially as the idle bugger so rarely updates his blog....

I feel he's still a bit fragile though. He's napping now after taking us out for a drive and walk. He usually has such energy.....

9th Aug 2009, 17:45

silar31 says:

Yes, it took me quite some time too. When they say the healing period is 4 - 6 weeks, they aren't kidding. He'll get there and probably have even more energy in the long run when he's able to breathe freely through his nose as he should have been able to do all along!

:)

9th Aug 2009, 22:36

Twiglet says:

Thank you Silar. I know he has been reading the comments on here. He is a bit low this evening, not like him at all.

TheOtherHalf says:

How wonderful to have such a sensual sense back - if that is not a weird way of putting it - must be glorious.

Yes, it is my favourite - I may deviate sometimes and "two-time" the Chanel No 5 with some flirtation, but I always come back to my first love in the end!!!

15th Aug 2009, 23:01

Twiglet says:

*Sensual sense* I know what you mean. He's having a great trying out his rediscovered sense with smells, good and bad...
