...But I couldn't resist.
I'm selling some stuff at Chapel Allerton Festival next weekend and
I've been trying to think of interesting ways of displaying my work. I
don't expect to sell too much as these are the first bits of silver
I've put on sale but I would like people to go away with some kind of
lasting impression. These proposal roses are so ridiculous I love
them. And the vase was a baragain 50p from the market and just the
right height.

So kitsch. Of course I just love it.

I was going to call it super kitsch but i changed my mind because kitsch seems like too much of a catch-all in acceptability terms and i'm not so much into 'kitsch' as certain kinds of kitsch. Which is a bit confusing I guess.. What was it Kundera said? Something like "kitsch is the absolute denial of shit."

nige says:

I've never heard that quote! Haha.

beth says:

Yep. I think I am at odds with kitsch!

I can imagine the reaction if I "came at her" with a Proposal Rosal.

Catches the attention though.
You'll either sell everything or nothing at all.

it is really important how you show your work, as I learned from showing mine in everything from xmas fairs to high end galleries. I always envied jewellers because they could cart around a fortune in a tiny bag. Pots have to be packed carefully.

whatever you do, do lots of it. Go for matchboxes or roses, but one or the other...or whatever works for you. I am into sales. and hey....charge a fortune.

beth says:

I'm doing both I think, I have a lot of work to do. I'm sharing my stall with becky who made my fascinator for the wedding, she's going to be selling a bunch of felt hairpieces so the stall's going to be a nice mixture of oddities, jewelery and things.

I'd been getting a bit down about having it all on black and clean and nice. I know there's a chance that I'm cutting out some people who wouldn't be drawn to tatty boxes and tacky roses but I should be honest about my work and how i see it in relation to other work. It's going to be fun at least gauging people's reactions.

if you ever figure out people's reactions let me know.

favourite craft fair jokes:
See son, that's what happens if you don't finish school.

You made this?
Yes.
It must be so rewarding (ie you don't make any money)
It's okay because I am a doctor in my spare time.

I love it, but I just don't know if I have room for it.
Well, just build another wing on your house.
