Thank you both. I love herons, they are my favourite British bird.
Thanks all but Blimey! Can't believe some of you haven't seen herons in trees before. They build their nests at the top of tall trees and in March/April can be seen sitting on what appears to be very precariously balanced nests.
I have blogged a heron in a tree before about this time last year at the same place. it is a large heronry, at one point we were looking at 15 herons at the same time, some on the ground, some in flight and some perched in the trees. BS took a picture that has 7 herons in it!
For anyone in London a good place to see herons nesting is Battersea park around the lake in spring. Herons in flight are also magnificent. They have a beautiful lazy motion and their body line is not unlike a pelican (think last few minutes of the movie Jurassic Park).
It's not that I'm a huge fan of herons or anything... ; )
:)
Even though I see them around London, they're The Hague's symbol and are everywhere (the canals really help). The homesickness for Den Haag that they evoke - even now, years since I've lived there - is a physical pain in my heart and gut. Sadly the place I still love and really miss has changed since I was there (and in any case I couldn't live in the country that treated my friend Lucia so injustly)
Yep, tons of them over here, only never saw them nesting, only being very territorial along the canals.
Glad I didn't make you sad with my herons D... : )
Joker: You must make it a project next spring as I'm sure you would take some splendid shots...
