"I expect to pass through life but once. If therefore, there can be any kindness I can show, or any good thing I can do to any fellow being, let me do it now, and not defer or neglect it, as I shall not pass this way again." William Penn

Don't tease! Go on about your fabulous shopping trip and spill the details.

I didn't think I was going to be a sucker for the swivelly screen, but actually it's a real bonus as QSS demonstrated earlier today when she took it for a spin.

Have been taking pics almost exclusively on a camphone for the past 3 yrs, so it was about time I stepped up to the plate.

Caine says:

Nice! What lens did you get? Considering how fab your camphone shots already are, I expect you'll surprise us with a whole new level of fabulousness.

Sprocket says:

Thanks C

I just have the kit 18-55mm lens

Using the SLR is a wholly different discipline to using the camphone, so it will be a voyage of discovery to see what I can wrestle out of this little beast. But certainly a journey that I'm looking forward to.

It's a lot of fun. Especially if you ignore the little manual for a long time. ;p When I first got my D80, I looked at the whole menu (it's amazingly large), then just went out and started clicking. I'm still learning and I still haven't read the whole manual.

I have a long flight ahead of me on Monday, so I may have a browse through the bookywook, mainly so that I don't actually break the thing by twisting something I shouldn't

29th Aug 2009, 22:43

Caine says:

Where are you going? You definitely don't want to start by breaking it. I did spend time on the initial diagram which pointed out what everything was. That and the how to change a lens section - I was terrified the first time I took my lens off.

Caine says:

Yeah, I'm familiar with the specs.

Big grats. ooking forward to some fab resuts !

As for the manual I found an online guide to the initial set up of my Nikon some 18 monts after I started using it. Adjusted the basic settings as advised and it reallly made a difference !

Just looked it up.. KenRockwell

Ace! Good luck with that, you're going to have big big fun.

Never thought i'd ever hear myself say it, but I think i'm actually going to leave the Nikon club in search of pastures new.

YAY! We'll go on some photo ops : ))

Sprocket says:

AF – ooh, we have identical (Nikon) bodies, does that mean I have to start painting my nails to match too??

Caine – I'm off to Missouri to see my nieces, which is why it was imperative that I get an SLR before I go, they're speedy little things and they'd just be a blur on my camphone.

– You did say you wondered what I'd achieve with an SLR, well, here goes. I've had at browse at Ken Rockwell's site and like the fact that he's a non-bullshitter when it comes to talking about cameras and taking photos, most arty types are far up their own ar***

Nige – Shame on you. Though t'will be interesting to see which pasture you favour instead.

Factotum – :-)

Kostika – the fun starts - - - - - - - > HERE!

3M – photo ops to pool eh ;-)
