Is de-clawing a common practice?

22nd Sep 2009, 06:32

Tori says:

It is a fairly controversial practice. According to wikipedia, an estimated 25% of pet cats in the USA are declawed.

We've never declawed any of ours, but my mother's current cat is declawed. It was a stray that she took in, and whoever had him before letting him become a stray, had declawed him

Seems pretty barbaric. Like dog's tail-docking or ear-clipping, both banned in NL, not sure about de-clawing, never come across it in NL.

Joker - it's vicious, indefensible stuff. The cat is mutilated by having everything past the end knuckle removed. Normal wallking, grooming & play behaviours are all screwed up by it. All in the name of protecting the furniture. My species really bewilders me...

is it done here?

22nd Sep 2009, 13:39

hildegard says:

No. Illegal here along with ear cropping, cosmetic tail docking, de-barking, electric shock collars & ferret de-scenting.

For which relief, much thanks.
