Night time in the tropics comes early, say 1830. Having eaten elsewhere, my companions walked me to the night market. The main road quiet after 2100; the bemos have left. I wanted to see what was on offer.
The barrow stands advertised local dishes; Gado Gado, Soto Ayam, Nasi, Mie and Bakso. The familiar names stuck on the glass in garish neon lettering, lit by energy saving bulbs.
Small barbecues further heating the already balmy evening. Chicken bits sizzled in a closed grill over hot coals. Regularly flipped and basted with a delicious smelling marinade. The sauce liberally slapped on by paintbrush. No silicone basting brush here. Pungent smoke rising as the red hot embers spat and hissed as drips fell through the grid.
The shouts of children playing in the sealed off street, open shop fronts each a new play area to explore. Fun for some, but 1 poor fellow was still on duty, selling his, or his family's catch. No rest for the wicked, no rest for the grindingly poor.
The luridly coloured treats, dessert perhaps? Tooth achingly sweet, a health hazard in festive and alluring colours. My chocolate condensed milk sweetened mango juice was enough of a sugar high for me to easily pass by without succumbing.
