Now with it's own brand identity!

I don't find this kind of book entertaining

Nor I.

I found it interesting that it had it's own category in Waterstones and that there were so many of them. They also had a brand identity which suggested they had an identifiable demographic profile. It makes me wonder then if the narratives were shaped by the desires of the demographic.

yee-UGH!! every time I see this section in my local waterstones it makes me angry. there seems to be a whole industry of these vile books. they're no better than the sensationalised stories tabloid newspapers thrive on to sell units. their only purpose is to spread fear and spur people into putting bigger bolts on their doors, and avoid any real constructive analysis of the serious issues at stake. grrr. rant over.

I had no idea this was a genre. Makes me wonder what else is out there I might not know about...

It's repulsive, but unfortunately it does sell. I grew up with extreme abuse, and it's something I don't talk about, let alone consider writing about it.

Well said Billion. Though less about another bolt on the door because they seem to be about the danger within- fear of family. I think this is a genre closely related to 'tut tut TV' where people can watch others behaving badly and sniff disapprovingly.

Mandy - me too.

Caine - and write it to meet the appetites of a particular market.

Taniwha, too right. I'd be infuriated if anyone ever suggested I write about my experiences in order to pander to a small niche audience. I like cold hard cash as much as anyone, but there are definite limits and what happened to me is off limits. To everyone.
