"There are some things a man can't do alone. I wouldn't think of trying anything so big without-" He stopped. The heavy waves beat the hard beach, and the yellow light of the setting sun illuminated a cloud to the eastward, a clot of gold.
"Without what?" Doc asked.
"Without love," said the seer. "I have to go the sunset now. I've come to the point where I don't think it can go down without me. That makes me seem needed."

Lovely! I love some of Steinbeck's work, Years ago I read a non fic of his called I think *Travels with Charlie* which was an account of a journey in a camper van he made across America with a black standard poodle. It is in my top 10 books.. : )

Maybe you should do a *travels with Tim*!

Sweet Thursday is a sequel to an earlier book, Cannery Row, and is nowhere near as good. He tends to be better known for the longer and heavier books, Grapes of Wrath and East of Eden. I prefer shorter and lighter Cannery Row and Tortilla Flat, though.

I would *love* to travel across the US in a camper van :)

I definitely want to get a camper van in the near future - when TOH and I have the time to be able to go off and make use of it. Next year maybe...

Of Mice and Men was the first one of his that I read as well - we studied it for English at school. The Penguin edition of Mice and Men had Cannery Row in it as well (I guess they're both quite short) so I ended up reading both. And while I quite liked Of Mice and Men I absolutely loved Cannery Row.

Grapes of Wrath is pretty heavy going, isn't it? Cannery Row is definitely recommended, though. Along with Tortilla Flat which very funny and very sad at the same time.

Hope you enjoy. I have a feeling that they would both appeal to your sense of humour. (Hope so anyway.)

Bed now for me as I have an earlyish start in the morning. Or sleep I should say as I'm already in bed :)
