Hens, new and newer

So our hens have been through the wringer somewhat over the past few weeks - One got ill and died, three replacement hens were bought taking us to seven. Then a fox killed two of the old ones, with another one being killed a week later. Substantial refencing and enhanced security measures have been put into place and today two more hens were got. They is tiny tiny Pekin Bantams and are very cute indeed. The old-new hens don't seem to be behaving as bitchily towards them as the old-old hens behaved towards them, which is good. Black hen is the only surviving old-old hen, which really doesn't surprise me. In fact I'm fairly sure that she's an avatar of the hen goddess, such is the force of personality she projects.

I was pondering this today. How come the foxes still get in despite the substantial re-fencing and the additional anti-foxing?

The foxes haven't been back since the refencing, touch wood. Long story.

Poor hens!

Ours have been OK since the move (touch wood) and we're a lot closer to a lot more foxes...

I quite fancy some bantams... I hear they're pretty crap layers though :)

Oooooh.... Yeah, that wouldn't entirely surprise me. They're extraordinarily cute, and do seem slightly more like pet animals than food-providers, but it's early days yet, haven't even got to laying yet. I'm very attached to them, though. Delightful animals to have around.

Sorry the fox looks upon your hens with such favour. I hope you have got him beat now. I like hens. I looked after some for a friend when young and got to love them. Each one a little individual!
