Yes, they are. He very nearly ended up without one of them. When he was 3 years old he was run over and had a very badly broken leg. It was touch and go as to whether the leg would have to be amputated. If you look closely you can see the scars on his right foreleg.

Makes it even more of a pleasure to see him running around on the beach on 4 legs.

Oh, poor Tim. Glad he kept his leg, a greyhound unable to run around freely and properly sounds particularly horrible.

If it has been a back leg the vet would have recommended amputation, but a foreleg is particularly awkward. Given the state of the leg - it was snapped in two and the lower part was completely mangled - it was a minor miracle that the vet managed to save it. It took 6 months of intensive treatment, including having a metal frame on his leg for 2 months. And then he had to learn to walk properly again. Strangely, he ran almost as soon as the frame came off, but he would hop rather than walk. It was quite a job to get him to walk properly again.

But to see him running around now you'd never guess what he went through. Not that he sprints any more (being almost 11).
