My favourite bit was when you spelt out words with leaves.

And when people got upset about it.

Clearly you're a great artist of your generation. Keep up the good work! :D

Rather disturbing words to send to a good artist. Although your purpose of building the art was stupid, I really appreciate the artwork.

I love Andy Goldsworthy's work, but this actually made me laugh. :P

Denise says:

This is just stupid. Goldsworthy's work is awesome by the way. :)

27th Oct 2011, 19:26

Kat says:

Ironic that you're trying to criticise Goldworthy's work by mimicking it.

If you don't like it then why bother wasting your time?

30th Oct 2011, 15:20

mat says:

I'm a massive fan of Goldsworthy. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and so on.

I could never create anything as beautiful as his work, but I can at least make something that makes me laugh. What's even funnier is the amount of people who didn't get the joke, and then bothered to tell me so.

30th Oct 2011, 21:59

Beloved Spaceman says:

What makes the joke more impressive is that all these comments have just pushed this page up the results from google images.

30th Oct 2011, 22:38

Harry says:

Im studying Andy Goldsworthy.. his work is so amazing yet you seem to disrespect him and his work for a small bit of humour. I don't see how you can't get inspired by his work like me and use his inspiration and the depth into his art to do something amazing e.g. write songs, poems, draw

20th Nov 2011, 14:30

Hmm says:

HAHAHA! These pictures made me smile :) Though it actually worries me the amount of people who can't take a joke... :/

26th Nov 2011, 13:28

hildegard says:

Oh sweet jesus christ in a handcart.

I was always moderately fond of young Goldsworthy's stuff but having read some of the comments from his fanboys & girls here, I find I'm rather put off him. I know it's not fair on AG but one simply doesn't like to feel any affinity with such humourless hagiographers.

I hate to be hoggin', but, really, you find this to be funny? I cannot believe you didn't make it on the comedy circuit!!!! You are so freakin' funny!!!! Your jokes are so clever and hilarious!

2nd Dec 2011, 05:09

mat says:

I feel it's probably worth pointing out that I have a friend who knows and works with Andy Goldsworthy, and she thought that he would likely find these pictures amusing. It's entirely possible he's seen them already.

Not certain if some of the comments would go down so well.

2nd Dec 2011, 09:56

Rich says:

I bet Mr Goldsworthy's made a penis out of leaves in his time. Or perhaps a vagina made of pebbles.

I'd never heard of him before this thread but his followers have put me off wanting to find out more.

i loved the way you reacted to all these so called Andy's "fans". you stayed calm and dealt with them nicely. after a few dozens of not very nice comments, i was expecting cusses and capital letters from you. and when you said "no, please don't let them spoil it" i laughed my head off. obviously these people are not successfully defending andy goldsworthy at all. anyways liked your work mat. keep it up! :)

also, this is the first time i've ever seen anybody pointing out the 'you're not your' thing. i've been annoyed by this but never had the guts to point it out.

27th Feb 2012, 18:33

EAP says:

Ugh. The Google image search really does lead me down idiotic roads every once in a while.

You do realize that Andy Goldsworthy's work consists of much than just configuring leaves into cusswords, right? He is a planner, a visionary, and a man who has great respect for the natural world.

I hope you're about fifteen years old or so. If so, I'll give you a pass based on youth-based ignorance. If not, you're pathetic.

3rd Mar 2012, 03:09

mat says:

You know what was most interesting about doing this?

Just how hard it was. Even to produce something so simple, such a pale shadow of the artworks I love so much, was incredibly difficult. Each of these pictures took a lot longer to set up than you might imagine. The simple act of looking through some leaves to find ones which could sit next to each other showed me just how much variation one tree could produce on the same theme, how much the effects of sun and rain, wind and decay could change something from it's neighbour.

Getting hands on gave me a whole new level of respect for Goldsworthy, and his work, something I haven't got in the many years of just looking I've done.
