Author shares his secrets of success with inspired pupils
AN ACCLAIMED author and TV scriptwriter is inspiring schoolchildren to develop their writing techniques.

Hornsea-based screenwriter Marvin Close has written episodes of Emmerdale and Coronation Street, as well as popular children's TV programme The Tracy Beaker Story.

He is now sharing his passion for writing with children in several East Riding schools, including Leven Primary School.

Leven head teacher Andy Dolman said: "Mr Close makes his living as a writer and is so enthusiastic about writing.

"He has a really deep belief that writing is important and when you get people that passionate about writing it is inspiring not just for the children but for the staff as well.

"The children will have all seen the Tracy Beaker show on TV, so they're very interested to hear from someone involved in the programme."

Mr Close, whose books include More Than Just A Game: Football v Apartheid, is spending five days working with pupils at Leven Primary School.

He is also working with pupils at Hook Primary, Middleton Primary and Beswick and Watton Primary.

Mr Dolman said: "The schools have been working together for three years on curriculum development.

"We are continuing to work together and this year we have done shared work on writing, with Mr Close as a writer in residence spending a number of days at the schools.

"Mr Close is working with my pupils on a writing project with the hope that our school will publish a book of writing."

Children at Middleton on the Wolds Primary have also been inspired by their sessions with Mr Close.

Teacher Clare Webb said: "They have been very excited by it, it has definitely inspired them to write and they are writing more creatively.

"When Mr Close first came in he showed the class an episode of Tracy Beaker that he did the script for and it was like having a celebrity in school.

"The children have been working on lots of different forms of writing and they are now putting a newspaper together."
