The black squirrels here are the black panther equivalent to the gray squirrel's leopard -- or the black "timber wolf" to the gray wolf. They're the same species, just with a genetic expression of melanism that makes them a bit more cold-weather tolerant.
Don't listen to the rumors that they're adapted for hiding in sewers and organize in packs for night-time assaults on the homeless. They're as individual as gray or red squirrels and will mug you for whatever edibles you've got in broad daylight, solo.
