Rahman, 80, sits quietly here every day and does not go soliciting. Rahman does not solicit even here. People who think he is beggar give him alms: Re.1 or 2/. His earning therefore is Rs. 10.00 to Rs. 20.00 per day. He has worked as a labourer in Delhi and Benaras before being immoblised by rheumatism and he taking to this kind of silent begging. His wife Sakina is visually impaired and remains in the shanty nearby. "main kahan bheek mangta hun yahan baitha rehta hun" "Where do I beg. I keep sitting here" He said when I asked as to since when he has been begging. He has taken to this kind of silent begging since 5 years. How can the government make begging an offence in a country where more than 80% people live below poverty line. During 2008 - 2009 125,000.00 people mostly debt stricken farmers and laborers committed suicide. Strange! while criminals and goons strut around with gusto beggars shrink with fear of arrest and imprisonment in shelters worst than jails.
