I came across this fungus, which goes by the name of 'Jew's Ear', attached to the bough of a decaying elder arching over an overgrown footpath. It is actually edible and highly prized, as was evident the following day when I discovered it was gone having been neatly removed with a knife. Beat me to it.

You can buy the very similar auricula polytricha dried in Chinese grocery stores under the slightly less contentious name of "wood ear mushroom". Needs a long soak.

If you want to try this one, look for "jelly ear" or "Judas ear" - the latter is the original name because it favours elder, on which Judas Iscariot is said to have hung himself. It's not as widely sold as wood ear but allegedly it can be got.
