December 9th: A Winter White Berry

(viewed 4280 times)

There are practically no street decorations this year, even less than last year, so I decided to turn to nature again for hints that Christmas is coming. So... this is the Portuguese Crowberry (Corema album), "camarinha", an edible pea-sized berry much appreciated by the local mushroom hunters. And since over here the mushroom season overlaps with the holiday season, and this shrub looks very christmassy when it's full of these white beries... Well, personally I consider them a symbol of the season. They're not exceptionally tasty, but they're fresh, crunchy and succulent. They bring back memories from my childhood, from when my grandparents took me mushroom hunting with them and taught me to love these berries, and they really get me in the mood for the season.

Wishing everyone a wonderful holiday season, filled with love, joy, warmth, and whatever it is that makes this season special and unique to each one of you.

lovely. I know the cousin of this plant, which is also called crowberry--but it has black berries, hence Corema nigrum--but it grows way up north. It is picked for pies and jams but it doesn't taste very good on its own so usually it's mixed with blueberries. Wonder how the white one tastes.

merry christmas, D.
